How it began…
One reason I became a doula is because mamas were telling me they felt pressured make decisions that weren’t aligned with their values. And they felt scared, and later disappointed.
Afterwards, they’d confess to feeling poked and prodded, and wondered if the beeping monitor was more important than their experience.
I could relate. For my first birth, after about 50 hours of labor, when my doctor said I’d need a c-section, I felt disappointed, and felt like I had failed.
That’s when I became obsessed with figuring out how to birth better. Every birth I’ve attended has taught me something.
Birth requires every layer of a woman’s being, and a mama’s mental state significantly impacts how her experience unfolds.
Intentional preparation, as early as possible in pregnancy, is the best defense against disappointment and trauma. It’s the most effective way to ensure you get the birth experience you want and deserve. It’s also the best way to prepare for motherhood.
