Teas for Postpartum Healing: Nurturing Your Body and Soul

Postpartum is a beautiful, yet delicate and challenging time for a new mom. Your body has just gone through a major transformation, and, in addition to taking care of a newborn, it’s also important to focus on your healing and recovery.

A key principle for postpartum recovery is: Warming. From your clothes to your foods, you want to nourish and warm yourself from the inside out.

That’s why herbal teas play a major role in your healing and recovery. It’s a natural way to support your body during this period. These comforting brews can soothe your mind, provide essential nutrients and aid healing.

Here are my favorite go-to teas as a postpartum doula. Discover how they can help you.

1. Raspberry Leaf Tea

Known to support uterine health, raspberry leaf tea benefits a mama during pregnancy as well as after birth. During pregnancy, raspberry leaf helps tone the uterus, helping to support an easeful labor. In fact, midwives often prescribe 1 cup daily during the 3rd trimester. During postpartum, raspberry leaf tea aids in uterine contraction, helping recovery. It also helps balance hormones and can promote a healthy milk supply for breastfeeding moms.

Benefits:

  • Helps tone and strengthen the uterus

  • Aids in milk production

  • Rich in vitamins and minerals like calcium and magnesium

2. Nettle Tea

This is one of my favorites! Nettle is a packed with nutrition, with vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins. It helps replenish nutrients, especially after blood loss during labor. It's also rich in iron, which is important for preventing postpartum anemia. Nettle tea supports the kidneys, promotes hydration, and boosts energy levels during periods of exhaustion.

Benefits:

  • Supports iron levels to prevent anemia

  • Replenishes nutrients and helps with fatigue

  • Promotes healthy milk supply

Special Brew: Add fennel to your nettle tea to further support digestion and reduce inflammation. This brew is the one I usually bring to every postpartum visit! Especially if mama’s had an epidural, IV fluids or c-section.

3. Ginger Tea

Ginger helps with digestive issues, and can be soothing for a new mom dealing with bloating, indigestion or nausea. It also has anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce swelling.

How it helps postpartum:

  • Eases nausea and digestive discomfort

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling

  • Supports immune health

Special Brew: Combine ginger with turmeric for an extra boost. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as well.

4. Lavender and Chamomile Tea

Together, this powerful combo helps calm a new mom and can help soothe anxiety, reduce stress and promote restful sleep - all, vital for emotional healing. Moreover, chamomile has anti-inflammatory effects that can assist with any physical discomfort from labor and birth.

How it helps postpartum:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Helps with sleep and relaxation

  • Eases muscle aches and cramps

  • Eases muscle tension and headaches
